Poll or Survey

I also used a program called quizizz.com for my poll or survey. At the end it gives a score for each student and lets me know which ones they got right and wrong, it also challenges my students because the faster you answer the more points you get.

                     Use in the Classroom
    • For this week my assessments (5th Grade) are going to be understanding how to do a survey and creating a bar graph with questions to help you understand. Create a survey (quiz) about technology and then I want to poll the class. I have two Polls/Surveys for them to take because I want to see where my students are in their understanding of Technology (Computers). These two Polls/Survery's will help me see where I need to redo past lesson plans so that I can make sure I am teaching the correct information and my students are retaining it. With my students who are higher level learners I will challenge them with another version of the Kahoot poll or Quizizz Poll/Survey that delves deeper into Technology, such as Coding, Tool Bars, Apps, and Internet Usage and Safety. In the end I want all of my students to pass both Polls/Surveys so when they enter 6th Grade they already have the basis down for Coding, Keyboarding with Shortcut Keys, and all computer basics (maximize, Function keys, open new tabs) needed to move forward in the curriculum for Middle School. 
      • I will demonstrate the learning in this assessment by tallying up the totals of my students and making sure all have a complete understanding of Technology up to this point.
      • Learning Objective #1, the students will be able to watch the Playposit questionaire, and answer the questions correctly, #2  then they will be able to take the two Polls/Surveys and answer them correctly. 
    • How could you incorporate project-based learning into your teaching or training, creation of multimedia materials, and learner creation of artifacts? I will incorporate it by doing constant repetition of the material, either through videos I will download and manipulate, by doing technology tools we have learned over and over and also reflection. Maybe have the students create their own polls/surveys which in turn will help with their memorization of the material and it will help their fellow classmates. 
    • What factors could influence (or not) the success of your implementation? What considerations may be needed? The factors that could influence the success of this is internet/computer usage. With only 30min of class time per week for each class, I have a small window for my students to learn a tremendous amount of material. What I plan on doing is using my free (Prep) and free (Tech) periods which are each 30minutes in duration as fillers. Let students come during this time and work on their lesson and projects for an hour, especially those who have no computers at home. 
  • Application:
    • How do the readings from week 1 on design principles for instructional multimedia align with the project? Again I am continuing to use the principles of Temporal Contiguity and Spatial Contiguity. These principles are the lifeline of my teaching and coaching. You are covering all bases with these two, seeing, hearing and doing, (narration, printed words and graphics) I feel this is the best way to learn and retain information into long term memory. I also sprinkle in the Signaling principle because if focuses on certain highlighted material that can also be go over again and again. For example if I was showing them a video, I could have animation that points to a certain object ( a usb drive) for example and it includes animation of how to use one. This helps the students see and understand what the technology is and how to use it.

    • How has your thinking changed this week about technology use? About project based learning in the classroom or workspace? About assessment that utilizes technology? 
    • What did you enjoy, or not?
    • How did you grow? This has to be the third week in a row that I have learned something new, have incorporated it into the classroom and our last Professional Development day had a bunch of these websites that we have used in class. Padlet, Kahoot, thinglink and Plickers just to name a few. I have gained knowledge on all of the websites we have used and to use them in lesson plans is a blessing in disguise. My students are being challenged, are excited and enthusiastic about Technology. I hope to continue engaging my students with different websites, topics and evaluations or assessments.

  • Use in the classroom:
    • My Lesson Plan will focus my 5th Graders on "Why is Coding Important to them". What can Coding do for there longer term education and possibly job opportunities. It's never to early to explore these possibilities.  
      • I intend to use this technology in a demonstrative way. I will show my students the positives of learning to Code, how it could be a possible career and just understanding code will help them in the 21st Century.  
      • Objective - I want my students to learn the importance of Coding and the many benefits to there future. 
    • My students will be able to work together and see how Coding is beneficial especially to my Hispanic, Black, and women students. I will have them click on the following links so they can see how they can get excited about coding and that it is really a part of our everyday lives. With them working together they will also see how Coding works and can complete different exercises on the Code.org program. 
  • Application:
    • The readings of week 1, the principles go hand and hand with this lesson plan. Again I will use 2, possibly 3 principles, they are: Temporal Contiguity, Spatial Contiguity and the Signaling Principle. To me all of these principles really work to benefit the student because they cover such a wide base of teaching. Your are seeing, printed words, graphics and narration all three of these are very beneficial to a students learning. Like Benjamin Franklin said. 
                     Students learning increases when we use these principles and I always try to show them                         through words, graphics and narration. Letting them write, see and hear really emphasizes                       what they are learning and helps them retain in long term memory. I am also hoping that                           seeing famous people being able to participate in activities and collaborating with there                         peers will making coding exciting and engaging. 
  • Reflection:
    • My thinking of Technology use changed this week in how I might present certain information to my students. I am thinking of coming up with ideas of making my lessons more graphical and with more videos and how to's. Students like to be challenged and enjoy seeing how things work, at least mine do. By using more interactive quizzes, graphics and videos my students will be extremely excited to attend class knowing they will learn more each week. This was a great assignment, it took me a minute to get going with it, but once I understood what we were doing from the readings and videos and scouring the internet, I took off with it. I could add alot more to it, but I don't want to get away from the main focus. There was nothing I didn't like about this topic except the getting started part. I plan on using this Concept Map in class actually as a Lesson Plan in itself. I was thinking of doing a Spider Map/Concept Map http://www.enchantedlearning.com/graphicorganizers/spider/ with my students. I believe it will help enhance their learning of any topic, subject or area of learning. I would probably start out with "What are the parts of a Computer", something they can all, even 2nd grade could figure out and use, then once they have the feel for it, try an different Technology Topic or let them create their own.

Week 5: Augmented Learning

Classroom Use

           My goal with this, is to bring to light the importance of coding through a program called Codecombat.com. While challenging, enlightening and engaging, this program utilizes the Python coding method and helps to enhance my students understanding of coding in a fun competitive way. 

            The students will watch the video, see the animation and follow the steps in sequence to bring their character to life by performing code strings. The students are to beat each level which gets more difficult as they progress but also teaches them through video and hints how to pass through. 

              I want my students to see my AR project and use the trigger image to get excited and interested to perform the coding in the game. 
  • Application:
                  The readings from week 1 align well with this task. Again, I am using two very important principles that I believe are the cornerstone to my classroom, the Temporal Contiguity Principle and the Spatial Contiguity Principle. Printed words, graphics and narration are very important. Learning this way is paramount to this project because their is tons of narration, animation and graphics for you to see and follow. One of the videos will show how the character moves from one area to the next and also as you learn how to move your character one line at a time you will be that much more confident in your ability to complete the task. I really like how you can go step by step in the process and see the movement of the character. That's Spatial contiguity. I show this to my students how you can do this step by step and what the next sequence or step is, its clear what you are to do next. The Spatial lets you go one bit at a time where as the Temporal shows you in narration and graphics what will happen. This is a great way to learn how to move in the game so that your students don't get discouraged, they are going slowly, but are getting the process down. My goal was to use the above principles on purpose and the signaling principle because of the arrows and the flashing of the character as it moves throughout the game.
  • Reflection:
                     My thinking was changed and enhanced this week because I will use the above principles to teach this lesson in the future. My students love competition, winning, challenges and being rewarded for doing well. The principles of Temporal, Spatial and Signaling go hand and hand. I like having my students see what to do, read or hear what to do and see it performed by me or another teacher. It really emphasizes and helps them to retain the information especially when it is their turn to perform the action. I enjoy coding, especially when you can play an educational game and learn from it while collecting tons of extras. With my students having the ability to click on the links, video and walk through that I provided in my AR, it makes the game of CodeCombat that much more fun. I have worked with some of  my students in CodeCombat and they learn the most when they see me perform the action and have me narrate and ask them what is going to happen next. I use the SmartBoard as a guide and let them practice on the board while the class watches this is part of principles that I want to follow and gives the students another set of eyes to see how the actions in CodeCombat are performed. Sometimes it easier for a student to understand what is happening when a classmate is doing the work and explaining it rather then me. It makes more sense.

Week 4 using Video


  • The subject is Technology (Coding), the students ages range from 3rd thru 5th grade basically 8 thru 11 years old and the video has a standard Youtube license. With this video I would show to my students after they completed the first two course levels. Once they understand the block based programming and also sequencing I would then enlighten them with this video. I think its great for them to see other young people like themselves perform the process because they can really relate to what is happening and see how understandable all of this really is. My students are getting a good dose of Computer Science by this time and if they can understand this video about debugging it will go along way in them continuing there CS experience in middle and hopefully high school. 


  • The content in the video is accurate for my area of study because it is directly from the Code.org website. It speaks directly about how to do the appropriate work that you want to accomplish on the Code.org website is very simple form but has a nice intro with the gymnast to entice the students.  This podcast enhances the learning of this area because the young girl is someone that my students could relate to. There are similar podcasts to this featuring NBA players, the president and famous celebrities that students can grasp onto and again relate to. Chris Bosh is a famous NBA player who many of my students know, look up to and if they see him coding it maybe important for them to do the same. The podcast also meets the standards for my school in that it is intended for school age students, especially those from 1st thru 8th grade. This coding is the basics of where you begin and this video does a great job in explaining and showing how beginning coding works. It is also easy to follow, goes step by step and has great narration from the young girl. It goes right with the Temporal Contiguity and Spatial Contiguity principles. The digital format is fine. My students can see .avi, .mpeg and Youtube videos without any issues. Listening and watching are the best way for my students to learn and this podcast does a very good job in that area. It reels the student in with the balance beam act and then shows them first hand on a pc how to perform the functions. 
  •   





My design principle is the Temporal Contiguity, I strongly believe people have more success learning when narration and animation are presented at the same time, not successively because then they have to piece everything together. In this instance everything goes together and the student can watch it over and over until they fully understand it. 

My lesson plan this week is Coding in sequence and debugging (Video 1 and 2 ignore middle video I can't get rid of it). Students will perform block based programming and finish courses 2 (sequencing) and 3(debugging) for the lesson.

I want my students to learn the block based programming step by step and how to correct mistakes. The students will perform 10 lessons before class is over, 5 in sequencing and 5 in debugging. 

I will add creativity by doing the Coding on the Smartboard and have a few students come up to the board and perform the same actions. 


  • Application:
    • Again I really love the Temporal Contiguity principle and the Spatial Contiguity principle. They both focus on graphics, although Spatial is step by step and Temporal is simultaneous with narration, I enjoy these principles because students can take their time and make sure they understand the lesson before continuing on. They can rewind to see step by step what is going on and they can watch it with the narration and graphics all together. I always try to use these two principles because I have these types of learners.  

  • Reflection:
    • I really never thought of adding a podcast to my class but to be honest I believe It would be very beneficial for my students to see me or a mentor of there's who they admire doing the lesson plan. I will really use this type of learning on the basketball court when I am coaching because seeing the play in action before you perform it gives you a great visual. I could see creating a podcast in class with my students on how to code which i think would give them a better understanding and be more confident in coding. 
    • I really didn't even know you could create videos for free and post them. I know I am a technology teacher and I should know this, but I work with elementary students so we basically keep it simple. I am really going to use this new technology and have my students start to create there own learning videos for other classes. 
    • Although I was under the weather most of this week and just kind of fought through this project, I don't know if this was my best but I did what I had to do. I do intend on using this technology and I learned that you can make so really great videos, nice and simple videos for your students to follow instead of just reading the directions to them and hoping they understand. 
    • Lastly, as you can see I created two videos, Part 1 is Sequencing and Part 2 is Debugging

Classroom or Learning Environment:

Students in 2nd Grade will use the Prodigygame, https://prodigygame.com/ (Math based game) to help improve their overall abilities and understanding of Mathematics. Students will see different math based questions depending on their grade and classroom assignment they are working on. As they progress their Wizard will gain powers, abilities, energy and shields to build on throughout the game. The students will find this fun, engaging and competitive as they will compete for prizes, coins to upgrade their wizard and pets that they can grow with.

Learning Objective:

Students will practice learning their greater than and less than 2 digit numbers and equal to. As they progress through two digit numbers, some higher learning students will progress to 3 digits.


Application:

In my lesson I will go back to two principles I believe are very important to my teaching. The Temporal Contiguity Principle and The Segmenting Principle. I am going to add a third which is the Spatial Contiguity Principle. All of these have their own benefits but they all have two things in common, graphics and narration. Students learn more and are engaged more when they see graphics, pictures, narration, printed words and hear those words spoken to them. Also, with the Segmenting principle the program (Prodigy) goes step by step to help the learner build their confidence and understanding of the assignment. The program will repeat if necessary the same problem over and over until the student has a full understanding of the solution and then it will continue on.

With the digital image technologies my students are able to see a visual or video which helps guide their understanding of the lesson and helps them retain what they are learning. The images also gives the students an idea of how the program works, why they should feel confident and also why they should feel excited about it.

I applied the principles of Spatial Contiguity and Temporal they work best with my students because they need both the visual and the video or narration. Also they need it to be demonstrated which I always show them on the SmartBoard.

Reflection:

My thinking was changed because I found a new way to present the information, through a GIF and also using Pixlr. I now know I can create different images and different GIF's to intice my students or get my students excited about a lesson. I actually put up the Pixlr program on all of my students computers this week and they had a tremendous time creating different pics from it. They were completely engaged and worked together on some projects (collaborated).

The technology that stood out was the Pixlr and GIF (meme generator) technology. I honestly didn't know you could create a GIF or generate your own meme to use in class. I will take this new found technology and use it as motivation in my classroom. I will come up with a few meme's and make some images with Pixlr to show my students how technology can be even more fun, engaging and beneficial.

I enjoyed making the Meme's. I am going to do a lesson plan on Pixlr, GIF's and include the Meme generator. I believe my students will benefit and have an exciting time using all of this new found technology. I am actually going to use the Blog from the first class on Coding and this Blog, plus the Padlet information in my classes so I can show my students different ways and ideas about technology.

Copyright Padlet Project

Classroom or Educational Setting

Outline:
I will use the padlet as a resource for the students to have in case they need a better understanding of coding. There are different websites that they can click on that will contain coding programs, introduction to coding courses, articles on how to and why coding is important, and lastly pictures and descriptions of how to code. I will demonstrate this lesson by showing a short video (a how to begin coding) that is included with the Code.org website. Then I will use the SmartBoard to demonstrate the course (angry birds) so the students get a narrative and a visual of how to code.

Learning Objective:
My Lesson is going to focus on Coding and we will use the www.code.org website. The grade I am focusing on is 5th grade. The goal is to become proficient with coding by become familiar with basic mouse use and the block-based programming interface they will be using throughout the course. Students will begin by simply dragging images on screen and then progress to dragging puzzle pieces into the proper order.



The students will learn how to assemble the arrows in proper order and attach them together to form a code. This will in turn move the angry bird the necessary steps to reach the pig and this will complete the code program. The student will perform 12 levels all different so to give them different variations of how to get the angry bird to the pig using the arrows. They are learning the first steps in coding called block based programming. I want my students to visualize what the next steps are in the process before placing the blocks so they can be a step ahead. 

How I will incorporate copyright into the teaching:

The students will use the copyright material in the padlet as a resource to help guide them in the lesson. I will explain to them the different types of categories in copyright so they understand what and why they are important for this and future lessons.

I will be focusing on two principles that I really want to incorporate in my classroom, the Segmenting Principle and the Temporal Contiguity Principle. With the segmenting principle, steps are being taken to understand the lesson. We are not showing the full blown process all at once, we are taking one step at a time for my students to understand how to block base code. This is a tremendous way of helping guide them which will lead to better overall learning and confidence because they are understanding the concept step by step and keeping it in memory because of the repetition. For students who have a lower working memory capacity this principle helps to create higher learners. I love the step by step process because students can always go back (repetition) do over and then move on when comfortable. 

With the temporal contiguity principle, the students are seeing graphics and hearing narration. As you can see in the diagram above the arrow is moving (their is narration I just don't know how to embed it) and it is showing the students what blocks to press in order to make the lesson work or come to life. Its like the tire pump example from our readings. I learn this way and for me to see the coding or the tire pump narration and video it makes it extremely more understandable and will stay in my memory long plus if someone was to talk about one of these examples I would right away see it (the video) in my memory and be able to put it together and make it work. My students will be able to see and do the same plus I can see the confidence and the need to be challenged on my students faces when they perform this lesson. 

With the Padlet technology we see where students can click and find valuable information on coding and how it adheres to the lesson. It falls in line with the temporal and spatial contiguity principles in that there are words, graphics, sounds and videos to go along with the links in the Padlet. 

Which principles do you feel you applied when creating your padlet ?

I really focused on the two I discussed earlier the Temporal Contiguity and the Segmenting Principle. My students get discouraged very easily and it comes from the life they have outside of the school. Most of my students are inner city or very low income students with one or no parents to help guide or nurture them. I have to be very conscious of that and it is why I use the above two principles because they build self esteem and confidence. If I throw to much at my students and feel they can do it on their own, many get discouraged and won't even give an effort, by doing it in steps and with narration and videos it makes it less challenging to START the lesson and when they do just one stage in the lesson they get extremely excited and will continue because they now believe they can accomplish it. 

Which principles did you intentionally use when designing your lesson idea ? 

The temporal and segmenting because of the graphics, videos, step by step process and narration that goes along with these two principles. 

Reflection:

How was your thinking changed this week ? 

I changed dramatically because I know I was doing a few of these principles but now I know the how, why and results I can get if I delve all the way into the principle to help my students. I was only touching the surface in a few of these principles and know that i know the full concept I will really use them in all my grade levels to help build my students up and challenge them. 

What Information, facts, processes, or technology stood out in your mind ? 

Honestly I have never used Padlet or Blog before in my life. I really like both because down the road if I ever need to recall something or a lesson from the past I can use both of these as a strong resource, not only for me but for the whole technology department. 

Were there tensions that you noticed between the content and design principles for multimedia or between two principles that you used ? 

To be honest not really. I felt the two I used go be integrated into one. Like I said I really like these two principles from a teaching and coaching perspective because I know I have used both in the past just not to the extent of what the definitions are for them, now I will. 

What did you enjoy, or not ?

This was a tough assignment for me at first because I really didn't know where it was headed, but as I read and starting coming up with thoughts and ideas it became free flowing. I enjoy learning about new technology or ideas it keeps me mentally fresh and able to come up with new ideas to throw at my students. I want them to be engaged, challenged, confident and full of energy when they come to my classroom, this project has done that for me. 

How did you grow ? 

Basically, every site, every principle, every video I watched to make this project work has given me new ideas and confidence I can really make a difference at my school. I even used some of what I learned last week in my lesson this week that I was observed on, and it help me achieve high marks.

Introduction

Hello fellow Central Michigan University students, Happy New Year. My name is Michael Perez and I am all the way out in New Jersey living near the Jersey Shore. It's cold out here, not as cold as Michigan LOL, but cold enough. I am presently a Pre-K thru 5th Grade Technology Teacher at Midtown Community Elementary School in Neptune, NJ. I love what I do and wouldn't change it for anything. This is my second year teaching and I have learned so much from year 1 to year 2, especially classroom management. I see over 400 students during the course of the week and having lesson plans for 6 different grades can be a daunting task, I love the challenge and I enjoy working with my students especially when we use Google Docs, Sheets or we are doing Coding (Computer Science). I plan on working in the educational field until I retire but I especially want to make a difference in my school using Technology, that's why my Master's is in Educational Technology.
